The National Academy of Sciences of Sri Lanka (NASSL) is pleased to congratulate four distinguished Sri Lankan women scientists who have been featured in the AASSA book publication, Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM): Advancing SDGs in Asia. Nominated by NASSL for inclusion in the publication, the four academics were selected in recognition of their outstanding contributions to science and their impact on advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Published by the Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia (AASSA) through its Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Committee, with support from the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), the book celebrates the achievements of women scientists across Asia whose work is driving sustainable development.
Sri Lanka is represented by Dr. Nadira Karunaweera of the University of Colombo for her contributions to combating neglected tropical diseases and strengthening public health (SDG 3), Prof. Vishaka Nanayakkara of the University of Moratuwa for expanding access to digital education through open learning initiatives (SDG 4), Prof. Dileeka Dias of the University of Moratuwa for advancing telecommunications innovation and resilient digital infrastructure (SDG 9), and Prof. Emerita Ruchira Cumaranatunga of the University of Ruhuna for her pioneering work in fisheries science, coastal research and environmental sustainability (SDG 13).
The publication brings together inspiring stories of women scientists, engineers and educators from across Asia whose work is addressing pressing societal challenges while advancing scientific innovation, education and sustainable development. It also highlights the importance of increasing the visibility and leadership of women in STEM as a key driver of inclusive and sustainable progress across the region.
